Handcrafted Padauk & Walnut Segmented Wooden Bowl

This is a “Segmented Bowl”  has 49 pieces of Padauk & Walnut Wood glued together.

Segmented turning on a lathe provides two benefits over turning a bowl from a solid blank. First, there’s less waste because the blank will already be hollow. Second, when turning, you’re nearly always cutting with the grain of the wood, rather than across it. The exception being the disk at the bottom. This reduces tearing, wear on the tools, and makes mounds of those shaving ribbons that are so satisfying to watch fountain off the work-piece and pile up on the floor.

This Padauk came from Brazil and it is a coarse-grained heartwood varies in color from a lustrous purple-red to orange-red. With age and exposure to sunlight, it turns deep maroon. Padauk wood features a pronounced ribbon stripe and is stronger than oak. The wood sands easily to a glass-smooth finish.

Walnut is an all-around popular choice for woodworking. It has a fine texture and works extremely well with hand and power tools. Walnut is prized for use in furniture, cabinets, and a multitude of other projects. It is a popular choice for turning and carving as well.

A large Padauk & Walnut Wood Segmented hand turned, one-of-a-kind bowl suitable for offerings, display, dried herbs etc . . . Finish is satin hand rubbed and food safe.

Remember there is only one of this bowl making it a unique. No two pieces are the same. Each will have different grain patterns and colors.
