Handcrafted Potpourri Hickory & Royal Paulownia Segmented Wooden Bowl with Antique Pewter Rose Lid
This is Royal Paulownia & Hickory segmented wooden bowl is made with wood purchased from an Amish, AR sawmill. It has thirty three pieces of Hickory & Royal Paulownia glued together. This provides two benefits over turning a bowl from a solid blank. First, there’s less waste of wood because the blank will already be hollow. Second, when turning, you’re nearly always cutting with the grain of the wood, rather than across it. The exception being the disk at the bottom. This reduces tearing, wear on the tools, and makes mounds of those shaving ribbons that are so satisfying to watch fountain off the work-piece and pile up on the floor.
Hickory is a type of wood that is known for possessing a unique balance between strength and stiffness. The specific choice to install Hickory cabinetry is usually the result of an appreciation for the unique visual quality of this wood or for its durability. Hickory is reported to be highly desired by hobbyists and craftsmen who use the hard heavy wood in small projects…
Royal Paulownia wood is known by a variety of names – Empress tree, Kiri tree, Sapphire Princess, Royal Paulownia, Princess tree, and Kawakami. The most common name, Royal Paulownia, is said to honor Princess Anna Pavlonia (1795-1865), daughter of Russia’s Czar Paul I. Native to China, the tree was first mentioned in an encyclopedia around 1000 B.C. The Chinese cultivated the Paulownia tree extensively because of its omen for good fortune. Paulowniamade its way to Japan, where it was valued for its light, but strong wood. It had a variety of uses from housing materials to wooden footwear. Japanese custom once held that when a daughter is born, a Paulownia tree should be planted. When she marries, the tree is then harvested to build her dowry chest and furniture..
