Description
Handcrafted Hickory Wood Segmented Wooden Bowl
This is a “Segmented” Bowl took a week to glue up. There 97 pieces of Hickory Wood glued together and was a fun project to turn on my lathe. This is the largest bowl that I have made to date. The Hickory wood came from an Amish sawmill in Salem AR.
Segmented turning on a lathe provides two benefits over turning a bowl from a solid blank. First, there’s less waste because the blank will already be hollow. Second, when turning, you’re nearly always cutting with the grain of the wood, rather than across it. The exception being the disk at the bottom. This reduces tearing, wear on the tools, and makes mounds of those shaving ribbons that are so satisfying to watch fountain off the work-piece and pile up on the floor.
Hickory reddish brown in color and tends to darken with age. Besides the common ribbon pattern seen on quartersawn boards, Hickory is also known for a wide variety of other figured grain patterns. Grain is interlocked, and sometimes wavy. This is a hardwood with a fine uniform texture and good natural luster.
A large Hickory hand turned, one-of-a-kind bowl suitable for offerings, display, dried herbs etc . . . Finish is satin hand rubbed and food safe.
Remember there is only one of this bowl making it a unique. No two pieces are the same. Each will have different grain patterns and colors.
