Handcrafted Ash & Walnut Segmented Wooden Bowl
This is a “Segmented” Bowl took a week to glue up. There 26 pieces of Ash & Walnut glued together and was a fun project to turn on my lathe.
This is Ash & Walnut segmented wooden bowl is made with wood purchased from Central America. It has twenty eight pieces of Ash & Walnut glued together. This provides two benefits over turning a bowl from a solid blank. First, there’s less waste because the blank will already be hollow. Second, when turning, you’re nearly always cutting with the grain of the wood, rather than across it. The exception being the disk at the bottom. This reduces tearing, wear on the tools, and makes mounds of those shaving ribbons that are so satisfying to watch fountain off the work-piece and pile up on the floor.
Ash is a light to medium brown color. Sapwood can be very wide, and tends to be a beige or light brown and has a medium to coarse texture similar to oak. The grain is almost always straight and regular, though sometimes moderately curly or figured boards can be found.
Walnut is an all-around popular choice for woodworking. It has a fine texture and works extremely well with hand and power tools. Walnut is prized for use in furniture, cabinets, and a multitude of other projects. It is a popular choice for turning and carving as well.
A large Ash & Walnut – hand tuned, one-of-a-kind bowl suitable for offerings, display, dried herbs etc . . . Finish is satin hand rubbed and food safe.
Remember there is only one of this bowl making it a unique. No two pieces are the same. Each will have different grain patterns and colors.
