Description
Handcrafted Basket Weave Design Canary & Padauk Wood Segmented Wooden Bowl
This is a “Large Segmented Bowl” took a two weeks to glue up. There 183 pieces of Canary & Padauk Wood Segmented glued together and was a fun project to turn on my lathe. This is the largest bowl that I have made to date. The Canary & Padauk Wood Segmented came from Brazil & the Canary Islands.
Segmented turning on a lathe provides two benefits over turning a bowl from a solid blank. First, there’s less waste because the blank will already be hollow. Second, when turning, you’re nearly always cutting with the grain of the wood, rather than across it. The exception being the disk at the bottom. This reduces tearing, wear on the tools, and makes mounds of those shaving ribbons that are so satisfying to watch fountain off the work-piece and pile up on the floor.
Canary Wood has a pale yellow-orange to a darker reddish brown, usually with darker streaks throughout. Canary Wood is also an Exotic Wood. Rated as very durable in regard to decay resistance, as well as being resistant to termite and marine borer attack. Easy to work with both hand and machine tools. Good dimensional stability. Turns, glues and finishes well.
This Padauk came from Brazil and it is a coarse-grained heartwood varies in color from a lustrous purple-red to orange-red. With age and exposure to sunlight, it turns deep maroon. Padauk wood features a pronounced ribbon stripe and is stronger than oak. The wood sands easily to a glass-smooth finish.
A large Canary & Padauk Wood Segmented hand turned, one-of-a-kind bowl suitable for offerings, display, dried herbs etc . . . Finish is satin hand rubbed and food safe.
Remember there is only one of this bowl making it a unique. No two pieces are the same. Each will have different grain patterns and colors.
